COMPETITION EDITION

REGIONAL COMPETITION WEEKEND

“The credit belongs to those people who are actually in the arena - who know the great enthusiasm, the great devotions to a worthy cause; who at best, know the triumph of high achievement; and who, at worst, fail while daring greatly - so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”
— Theodore Roosevelt

This motivational quote above recently made it into our weekly newsletter and, it’s OH SO TRUE. Harbor City Music Company Show Chorus was in the “arena” (on stage) with 59 members (9 of which are new to HCMC; 8 new to a Sweet Adelines competition).  The chorus had a theme of WILD, WICKED WOMEN going to contest this year.  Yes, we are a wildly enthusiastic group of women and, yes, we planned on being “wicked good (shooting for higher scores in the competition)! HCMC left Ocean City, Maryland following Region 19's competition with a 1st place medal for Mid-size Chorus and 2nd place medal overall in hand.  Additionally, the judges gave us glowing compliments and we know where to focus moving forward!  We triumphed, achieved many of our goals, did a little daring and had a BLAST!

At the contest, we were thrilled to have a “’fan” section that included many former members, family members and friends.  Perhaps they helped to initiate our warm welcome on stage, but it was equally thrilling to have TWO standing ovations during our competition performance.  As long term member, Jane Thompson, put it, “audience reaction often excites me more than medals.”  (It is nice to get great scores and medals, however)!

OUR QUARTETS MAKE WAVES IN OC

Beginning with our own Diane Kelley(lead), performing in her new "pick-up" quartet (Janet Ashford, Tancey Bosna, and Claire Domenick) as mic-testers, HCMC helped to get the quartet competition underway. One of our newest quartets, LUSTRE (Lori Crouter, Lori Dreyer, Jenny Harris, and Laura Rivera), won the Novice Quartet Award. Recently back on the scene, TAG, with HCMC members, Sue Taylor and Sandy Knapp singing with Bonnie Austin and Lois Anderson walked away with 5th place medals. Marianna Gellert and Sharon Ehrisman teamed up with Cyd Wentsel and Jill Bolich from Upper Chesapeake Chorus to form VOGUE in recent months to capture 2nd place at Regional Contest. Our present 8th place International Champions, CAPRI, wowed them with their latest songs during competition as evaluation only and during the show.

OUR LATEST ADDITIONS TO THE CHORUS

HCMC is pleased to welcome our newest leads to the chorus, Susan Kohli and Tracey Moe. Susan, mother of Mandy Kohli (an HCMC tenor) happens to have a familial HCMC connection, she is related to former HCMC member Sally Marsh. Tracey Moe returns to the barbershop experience after taking some time off from Carolina Harmony since her move north from North Carolina.

HCMC ANNUAL FALL SHOW — MARK THE DATE

Nightlife Quartet; Jeff Baker
( Bari), Brett Littlefield (Bass), John Sasine (Lead) and Rob Menaker (Tenor)

Nightlife, 1996 SPEBSQSA International Quartet Champions, will be in the mid-Atlantic region on September 23, 2006 for the HCMC Annual Show. The last time they performed on the East Coast was at a show in Hilton Head, N.C., 2005. While they aren’t retired, they do very few shows in a year and we are THRILLED that they will be sharing their wonderful songs and humor with us. They will make your sides split with laughter and your eyes teary with their beautiful harmonies! You might be interested in knowing that they have performed for Dick Van Dyke, former Senator John Glenn, Ted Turner and Jane Fonda. We’d love to have them add YOU to their celebrity listings.
